After a five-year-long contract campaign that culminated in the first graduate workers’ strike in the nation in 1974, GEO has been a bastion of shop-floor organizing for 50 years. Through those years, we have been a prominent force in academic organizing and unionization. We have fought tooth and nail for better pay, better benefits, and for a decent way of life for our members. Now, with the 50th anniversary, we are honoring those who paved the way for us, but also looking forward to the future. GEO is our members both past, present, and future, and we want to celebrate our members. This has inspired us to do two things for our 50th anniversary.
First, we invite you to our 50th People’s Gala at the Rogel Ballroom on April 26th from 7-10pm. All are welcome to come! We are also launching a Worker’s Solidarity Fund that will allow us to better prepare to strike and fight for workers rights. Besides donations on our PayPal page, there will also be merch for sale shippable globally–besides showing your support for grad workers at UMich, proceeds will also go directly to the Worker’s Solidarity Fund.
