How it Works

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) is responsible for negotiating and enforcing the employment contract for all GSIs and GSSAs. All graduate students can be members of GEO because all graduate students benefit from a strong contract. Our membership percentage is a major factor in how successfully we can achieve our bargaining priorities; a high membership percentage signals to the university that large numbers of graduate students stand together behind GEO’s proposals. Being a member allows you to participate in the organization’s democratic processes, such as voting on bargaining priorities and contracts.

Because all GSIs and GSSAs receive the benefits and protections we negotiate, we encourage all employees to contribute to that representation. The cost of membership dues is small (1.65% of your stipend), but the impact of your membership is substantial. Your dues help maintain and improve working conditions for yourself, for our fellow graduate employees, and for those who will come to Michigan after us. Once you become a member, dues are deducted from your paycheck only during the semesters you are employed as a GSI or GSSA.
