On Monday, UM implemented its new policy for providing benefits to same-sex domestic partners.  The university has adopted a designated beneficiary plan which requires the employee to sign an affadavit certifying that the person to be covered (the ‘other qualified adult’ as the UM has put it) satisifies a set of criteria.  As with the plan GEO put forward, the basic idea is to establish that the designated beneficiary has strong ties to the employee.  While the language isn’t the same as our plan, and there are several requirements that GEO members would have phrased quite differently, the preliminary judgment of those who have looked at it is that it’s workable and that nobody should lose coverage.
