GEO this week exercised its right to call for an Equity and Access Special Conference with the University of Michigan. The purpose of the Special Conference is to discuss the hiring of a GSSA to continue working to improve the accommodations process for employees with disabilities.

During the last round of contract negotiations, GEO and U-M negotiated the terms of a project aimed at improving access to accommodations for employees with disabilities and agreed that an Equity and Access GSSA would be hired to work on the project. GSSAs were hired in both the 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years, but even though the agreed upon project has not yet been completed, U-M has resisted hiring an Equity and Access GSSA for the 2010-11 academic year.

It is GEO’s position that the hiring of an Equity and Access GSSA is an important step toward improving conditions for employees with disabilities at U-M. It is our hope that the university shares our commitment to building a workplace in which employees with disabilities are valued and given the tools they need to succeed on the job.
