On Thursday, September 15th, 2011, the Michigan House of Representatives approved two bills that would make it illegal for public employers to offer their employees domestic partner medical benefits. Bills HB 4770 and 4771, sponsored by Rep. Dave Agema, are overt attacks on Michigan’s LGBT employees. This legislation interferes with the constitutional right of the University of Michigan to set benefits for their employees, and would undo domestic partner benefits for GSIs at UM after the duration of our negotiated contract. GEO members have worked to secure benefits for GSIs and their partners, and we must take action to protect these benefits both for ourselves and for other public employees around the state.
Rep. Tom McMillin claims that this discriminatory legislation supports “the will of the people.†Tell your representatives that anti-LGBT bigotry does NOT represent our will! Contact your representatives:
