The graduate employee unions at Yale (GESO) and Columbia (GSEU) have voted overwhelmingly to hold a joint strike the week of April 18-22. The administrations of both universities are refusing to recognize the democratic right of these workers to form a union–in defiance of the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the opinions of many leaders across the country, and the majority of graduate employees at each school.

[You may remember Columbia’s current president, Lee Bollinger, from his tenure here at UM, where he proudly trumpeted his reputation as a fighter for social justice, defender of affirmative action, and self-proclaimed “authority on the First Amendment.” While he always praised GEO on the record, upon arrival in NYC, he experienced a sudden about-face, claiming that a union at Columbia might damage the delicate academic relationships there.]
