Today’s decision by the Michigan Employment Relations Commission to dismiss the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation’s challenge to GSRAs’ petition for an election confirms GEO’s position that the MCLF is an outside party with no standing to prevent GSRAs from having the freedom to vote. This decision upholds Michigan law keeping the decision to unionize in the hands of the majority of voting employees, not outside advocacy organizations.Â
“The goal has always been to get GSRAs the right to vote on joining a union. This decision affirms that a third party has no role in limiting such a vote,†GEO President Samantha Montgomery stated.
Unfortunately, MERC declined to certify the election agreement between the University Administration and GEO at this time. MERC’s decision does not prevent GSRAs from participating in an election. To the contrary, MERC recommended that GEO and the University move forward with the election. In addition, MERC offered to conduct the election.
GEO plans to work with the University of Michigan to set the details of the election.
