Grading got you down? Feel like you’re drowning in a sea of student emails? Shake off the end-of the-semester blues in solidarity at the last GMM of the year and GEO’s 40th anniversary party!!
Our final GEO membership meeting of the year will begin at 7 p.m. next Friday, April 10th in the Neutral Zone (310 E. Washington St, Ann Arbor). This is an extra special GMM since it coincides with the 40th anniversary of GEO’s founding in 1975 and we will have a huge party right after to celebrate!
This GMM will recap of our achievements from the past year as we move fully into developing a platform for our upcoming contract negotiations. To prepare we will hear from Andre Wilson, who chaired the 04-05 bargaining committee that successfully expanded GradCare and made minority issues matters of popular concern. Andre’s advice and strategies will offer insights as we make our own plans for bargaining in 2017.Since this is the final GMM of the academic year, we will also be electing officers for 2015-2016. If you are interested in joining the GEO leadership there will be an informational meeting at 3pm on Tuesday, April 7th in GEO HQ, or you can contact denise@geo3550.org. Even if you cannot make the meeting, all you need to do to run is be a member in good standing and be nominated at the GMM.
One last item of business will be a ratification vote on the constitution for the Council of Graduate Employee Unions (CGEU). The Coalition of Graduate Employee Unions (CGEU) is made up of local unions (and unrecognized groups functioning as or aspiring to be unions) in the US and Canada that represent graduate student employees. It meets each summer for what is usually a very exciting and educational conference, which you can attend if you like; this year’s conference will be at UMass in Amherst, Massachusetts. CGEU has been operating for many years without a constitution, but the one linked to here was adopted at last year’s conference. If we ratify it, GEO will become an official member of CGEU. Membership costs nothing and imposes no responsibilities on us unless we volunteer for them, but it will allow those who attend the conference to vote.
After the GMM get ready to party in honor GEO’s 40th anniversary with food, drinks, dancing, and most importantly, birthday cake!!! We really went all out with a dj, cocktails and beer, and all kinds of fun activities, so we can properly celebrate GEO as the longest continuously operating graduate employee’s union in the United States! It’s bound to be a really great party, and on a Friday no less. So no excuses! Get yourself and get your friends to the GMM next Friday! RSVP on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/
