News from Graduate Employees’ Organization 3550
August 29, 2023
ANN ARBOR—Members of the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO), American Federation of Teachers Local 3550, and the University of Michigan came to a settlement agreement on August 25, 2023. This agreement came after a two-day, online vote that took place from August 22 to August 24, in which members overwhelmingly voted to ratify a new contract, days before the Fall semester started. Settling this contract officially ends the longest strike in GEO history, which began on March 29, 2023. This collective decision means that GSIs/GSSAs, GSRAs, graduate workers on fellowship, and all others who supported GEO’s strike should now resume the teaching, research, and service work that we love and that contribute so much to the University of Michigan.
On the settlement, GEO President Jared Eno said, “After five months of striking and nine months of bargaining, this historic contract is the result of profound bravery, care, and solidarity between graduate workers. There is still work to be done, but we know now without a doubt that we have the power if we stand and fight together. Let’s make this university work for all of us.”
