JANUARY 23, 2026 — Labor unions and organizers in Minneapolis have called for a statewide general strike today in Minnesota in order to combat the federal government’s reprehensible and dehumanizing attacks on immigrants and other community members. The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO and its many affiliates are encouraging members to take part in the Day of Truth and Freedom work, school, and shopping stoppage against ICE’s operations in the Twin Cities and the failure to hold the murderer of Renee Good accountable.
The people of Minneapolis are exemplifying what it means to stand in solidarity with our immigrant neighbors. As united grad workers—citizens, permanent residents, and visa holders—we raise our voices in support of their continued resistance to the Trump administration’s attempts to abduct members of their community.
This violent suppression does not begin and end in Minnesota; rather, it is part of a larger system of domination. These attacks on immigrant communities are also attacks on workers—a dynamic that is especially clear on our campus, where the university administration has neglected to help grad students whose visas are revoked or delayed and even assisted CBP in its targeting of Chinese graduate students. More broadly, we condemn the brutality of ICE’s actions and recognize that it is no accident that these raids are indiscriminately targeting people at their workplaces, in addition to their homes and schools, under the guise of protecting people from “the worst of the worst”.
As graduate workers at the University of Michigan, we acknowledge our struggles are not just conjoined with the wider labor movement but also with other struggles for liberation and dignity. We must fight this climate of fear that is constraining the lives of our immigrant neighbors in both Michigan and Minnesota by taking collective action with our community, fighting with and for each other every step of the way.
