Article X, Section D in our contract deals with our employment fraction–in other words, the weekly work expectation that sets our pay rate. Fractions range from .087 (about 3.5 hours a week) to 1.0 (35.5 hours or more per week). Starting this year, there is a new fraction in our contract: .65, which covers the range between 25.5 to 30.49 hours per week.

These fractions are an estimate of what we work each week in proportion to the Full-Time Equivalent (FTE). Our contract also states that, because this is an estimate, it is subject to review. In other words, if you are consistently working more hours than your fraction specifies (find this info on the Fraction Calculation Sheet you were given along with your employment offer), your fraction can be changed. This is done by filing a grievance within 20 days of first realizing that you are working over your fraction. The contract further states that if you win and “the fraction was unreasonable,” your department will “make an appropriate retroactive adjustment in salary”  and change the course’s workload for future terms.
