Next year, GEO members will be negotiating a new contract with the University. This happens only once every three years. It is a rare and important opportunity to demand changes that could improve our lives here at UM.

And things do need to change.

Last term, GEO’s Contract Committee surveyed over 1,100 UM grad students. The results of the survey highlighted serious and ongoing problems that need to be addressed. Our members are facing a crisis of affordability, being squeezed between a skyrocketing cost of living in Ann Arbor (driven, in large part, by exorbitant rents) and paltry university wages. We’re also seeing an abject failure of University accountability when it comes to issues of discrimination and sexual misconduct. Read the full report on our survey findings below.

We know that the University is not going to change by itself. As the University’s response to the pandemic has made plain, the University will only listen to our needs when GEO members like you take action. In the past, GEO members have been able to win historic gains in our contract – you can make it happen again!

That’s where our next contract campaign comes in. Over the next few months, we’ll be deciding what to demand in our next contract. If there is an issue that you’re passionate about – from getting a raise, to sexual misconduct prevention, childcare access, climate change, and more! – this is your opportunity to make a difference.

Sign up to join a working group to help develop demands for our next contract!
