HR resists open bargaining, asks grads to pay for bargaining space
Graduate workers overwhelmingly voted in support of big, open, and participatory bargaining sessions. Academic HR agreed to meetings with as many as 160 grad workers present, but continues to refuse Zoom access for workers, thus excluding immunocompromised workers and those with childcare and other responsibilities. At the same time, administrators proposed that grad workers pay the university to bargain with the university in rooms owned by the university.
All day Friday, members deliberated during a back-and-forth on email with Academic HR, who ultimately refused to meet with the bargaining team.
“GEO is the membership. Attempting to exclude rank-and-file members is the same as refusing to bargain with the union.”
– Conrad, Economics Department
Trans Health Working group prepares to file Unfair Labor Practice
Despite repeated requests from the trans health working group, administration continues to refuse to provide information about healthcare utilization, disrupting efforts to bargain on trans health issues. In response, the trans health working group informed academic HR that they plan to file an unfair labor practice (ULP) barring a good faith effort to fulfill the request. Academic HR has a legal obligation to provide data relevant to GEO’s contract campaign.
What happens next?
- On Friday, we discussed how to respond to HR’s refusal to engage in genuinely open and accessible bargaining.
- As a result, rank-and-file members will speak at a Regent’s meeting about our platform and HR’s intransigence next Thursday evening, Dec. 8th in Ruthven Building (University Hall).
- Members will reconvene Monday at 1 pm on Zoom. Join the call at bit.ly/BargCheckIn
