On March 12th, 2014 the GEO Steward’s Council voted to endorse the Transit Improvement Millage for Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, which will be on the ballot on Tuesday, May 6th. With an increase in funding, the Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority will put more buses on the road, extend service areas, improve bus stops, and run services more frequently. We encourage our members to inform themselves about the millage and get to the polls!

Because many graduate students do not own cars and few affordable housing options exist within walking distance of campus, public transit is an important part of daily life for many graduate students at the University of Michigan. Many GEO members rely on Ann Arbor Area Transit Authority buses to get back and forth between campus and home, do their grocery shopping, and get to medical appointments. Improved bus service would not only make our lives easier on a day-to-day basis, but it would also open up the possibility of moving to outer Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, where rents can be much lower.

The impact of this millage will have a far greater reach, however. Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti residents with disabilities, senior citizens, and low-income families will be able to access services they need and rely on buses to get to school and work on time. This millage will improve life for many in the Ann Arbor area.
