ANN ARBOR, MI – Early this morning, law enforcement organizations—including the FBI, the Michigan State Police, and local police departments—executed searches at five residences of pro-Palestine activists at the University of Michigan, at the behest of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. These raids occurred in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Canton.
In Ann Arbor, officers detained and questioned two activists, including a member of GEO, and confiscated their electronic devices. In Ypsilanti, officers detained and released four individuals. In Canton, officers raided one residence. The officers also confiscated personal belongings from multiple residences.
Executors of the search warrants were reluctant to reveal their warrants or their reason for visiting these activists. At this time, all activists are safe. We are not aware of any visa holders being affected by these raids.
GEO is committed to protecting the rights of graduate workers at the University of Michigan, including the right to free expression. We strongly condemn the actions taken today and all past and present repression of political activism. We urge University of Michigan administrators, the Regents of the University of Michigan, and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to end their campaign against students and stop putting graduate workers in harm’s way.
